Compromise…Is it Good or Bad?

compromiseWhat is Compromise?

The word compromise has several definitions.  One of those definitions is: an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions.  So is it a good thing to compromise or a bad thing?  That depends on what is being compromised on.  In the context of a marriage, friendship, or even a business relationship, compromise is not only a good thing, it is a required thing!  Without compromise in these types of relationships they stop being mutually beneficial and one party becomes a dictator.  People don’t always see eye to eye on everything, so the answer to keeping a relationship mutually beneficial is for both parties to make compromises from time to time.

That does not mean that everything in a relationship should be compromised on.  Most single believers want to meet someone who is also a believer and many of them will not compromise on this.  That is not a bad thing.  No one would fault anyone for standing firm and not compromising on something like that.  Things like hair color, height, etc. are things that a person could compromise on.  I’m not sure why using the example of singles came to mind, but it works well for the point I’m trying to make.  Compromise is vital and a good thing to do, but there are also things that are non-negotiable and to compromise on these issues could cause a person, a small group, or even a large body of people great harm.

Compromising Your Faith and the Word of Yahweh

Some other definitions of compromise are: a middle state between conflicting opinions or actions reached by mutual concession or modification, the acceptance of standards that are lower than is desirable, to weaken a principle by accepting standards that are lower than is desirable.  In some cases compromise is not only a bad thing, but can make the difference between life and death.  When it comes to our Faith and the Word of Yahweh, there can be NO compromise.

It seems that every day, believers become more and more like the world that we are called to be set apart from (Romans 12:2) because we have stopped standing on the firm foundation of Yahweh’s Word (2 Timothy 2:19) and have started to compromise.

Yahweh’s word is final, set in stone, and it does not change. (Isaiah 40:8, 2 Timothy 3:16, Proverbs 30:5)  He does not change. (Malachi 3:6)  Most believers would not admit that they compromise their faith or His Word, but when I look at the body as a whole, that is exactly what I see, Compromise.

Many people are simply ignorant to the truth.  They believe what they were taught by their parents, grandparents, Sunday school teachers, youth pastors, associate pastors and head pastors and never give what they say a second thought.  Why should they, these are people who love them and want to see them do well and be blessed.  The thought that these people could be wrong never crosses most of our minds.  A lot of people are compromising their faith and do not even realize that they are doing so because they never take the time to test what we are taught against the Word of Yahweh (2 Peter 2:1-3, Matthew 7:15-20, 1 John 4:1-3, 2 Timothy 4:3, Colossians 2:8).

Compromising and Using Scripture to Justify It

There are things in scripture that are being compromised on and people justify these things by using scripture.  If that is not a contradiction then I do not know what is.  I’m talking about people forsaking scripture in the name of love.  I’m talking about people being so scared of hurting someone’s feelings that they neglect to point out sinful behavior that is unbiblical.  I’m talking about people being so worried about being politically correct that they stop being biblically correct.  Most people will not tell someone when they are sinning and they justify their lack of action by saying something like, “It’s not my place to judge…”, or they will quote Matthew 7, which does not say that you should not humbly and with love tell someone when they are sinning.  It says not to be proud and point out sin in other people while you act like there is no sin in your own life.

Two of the biggest issues that the body as a whole compromises on right now are abortion and homosexuality.  These two issues should be very easy for the church to take a stance on.  Both of them are wrong according to scripture.

Homosexuality is an abomination according to Yahweh and He hates it. (Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)  There are many more scriptures that very plainly call homosexuality a sin but for the sake of time and space I will refer you to my teaching on Homosexuality on here.  The point is, homosexuality is wrong; it is a sin, and an abomination.  Most believers will not take a strong stand against it though.  They remove themselves from the issue with the argument that “It’s not my place to judge…, I’m called to love my fellow man”, which is 100% right, but for us to not openly  rebuke homosexual behavior, we are compromising His Word.  I’m not saying that we should not love these people or that we should be hateful to them, but there is a big difference between being hateful and showing someone the truth in love.  After all,  we are called to correct others when they are sinning. (Proverbs 27:5, Luke 17:3-4)

We need to love the person and rebuke the behavior, but most people will not do that because they are afraid of hurting someone’s feelings or feel they have to be politically correct about the topic, or maybe they are afraid they will be labeled homophobic.  Most people would rather be politically correct than biblically correct and that is sad.  It is not just individuals either.  Whole churches and even whole denominations are compromising the Word in regards to homosexuality.

Recently the Boy Scouts of America (BoA) changed their bylaws to allow openly gay leaders and members.  Churches have been one of the biggest supporters of the BoA and when they made this change a lot of them did the right thing and cut ties with the BoA.  There are other churches out there though who have renewed support for the BoA, compromising His Word.  Regardless of the reason for their decision, to renew support for this organization after they openly support a lifestyle that is opposed to the Word of Yahweh is WRONG!  Any church or religious organization that claims to believe in Y’shua and the Word of Yahweh that has not immediately stopped all support of the BoA is compromising!

There should not have been any church meetings or votes about whether to continue support of the BoA.  As soon as the BoA made this announcement, every church should have immediately responded by pulling their support.  It is as simple as that.  Any church that is continuing to support the BoA is supporting an openly gay lifestyle and they are compromising.

Abortion is another issue that should be very easy for the church to take a stance on.  Thou shall not kill. (Deuteronomy 5:17)  It is as plain as day, do not kill.  People like to argue about when the baby becomes a person but Yahweh says that he knows us before we are born.  (Jeremiah 1:5)  Some say that a woman should be able to have control over her own body, but for a believer to not openly rebuke the killing of an innocent life, they are compromising.    This is another issue where believers should show love to these women, but rebuke the action they are pursuing.  Instead, most just keep quite because they don’t want to hurt feelings or be politically incorrect, but once again, they have no problem being biblically incorrect!  People can try to spin it any way they want but the truth is, Abortion is wrong, it is killing.  Yahweh does not like abortion! (Exodus 20:13, Exodus 23:7, Deuteronomy 27:25)  It’s as simple as that.

Compromising for Numbers and Money

This is probably the most controversial part of this whole topic, but anyone who does not believe it is just lying to themselves.  There are many, many pastors and leaders out there who have compromised everything for numbers and/or money.  I’m sure they all started out with the right motives and a pure heart, but man is easily corruptible and the two easiest ways to corrupt a man are with power and money. (1Timothy 6:10)  Most of the well-known Pastors of Mega Churches are compromising Yahweh’s word in order to keep their numbers up which in turn keeps the money flowing in.  They fail to teach the whole Word of Yah and instead push a “Prosperity Message” or only talk about the “Happy” parts of scripture and never get into the whole truth, but that is what people want to hear. (2 Timothy 4:3) If these pastors were to start teaching the whole Word of Yah and started telling people the whole truth, they would lose members and money.  The pastors are compromising the whole Word in order to not lose members and the members are compromising by not demanding that the whole Word be given to them because they don’t want to hear about the parts that require work, action or sacrifice on their part.  Most people want to play church for a couple of hours once a week where they sit and listen to a feel good message before they head out to the buffet for lunch.

All these televangelist are just as bad.  They pull on the heart strings of sincere people to send in all this money and for what?  So they can afford to fuel up their private jets, buy fancy cars, and make the note on their million dollar homes?  I do not think it is bad for a preacher or teacher to be blessed financially; there are many people in the Bible who Yahweh blessed with wealth.  These people were not compromising though, they were doing the will of the Father and He saw fit to bless them.  The people I’m talking about are more salesman than shepherd and will say whatever they need to say to keep the money flowing in and that means compromising His Word.  Some of these pastors and teachers also travel the country to do speaking engagements, which is a good thing, until you see what they are charging for ticket prices.  I have a huge problem with people monetizing our faith.  It is completely unbiblical!  I understand that there are expenses associated with having these speakers such as, renting buildings, paying for the lights to be on and to have AC or heat running so everyone is comfortable, but I seriously believe that anyone who is trying to make money off of spreading the Word of Yahweh will be severely judged because of it. Salvation is a free gift (Romans 6:23) and Y’shua instructed us to go spread the good news to everyone (Mark 16:15-16) and NOT to take any worldly possessions with us and He certainly didn’t say anything about making anyone pay to hear the Word. (Luke 10)

Imagine if Y’shua were like these pastors and teachers…”Hey everyone, Y’shua here.  I’m going to be speaking at the base of this mountain later and want to make sure you all come.  There is a $130 cover charge for your tickets and if you get hungry we have fish and bread plates for $20 a person at the concession stand.”

Can you even imagine that?  That is basically what these people are doing when they monetize the Word of Yahweh.

Softening the Truth for Numbers

Yes, there are teachers out there that are doing just that.  In the name of bringing more people to faith they want to present people with a watered down version of the truth.  They are compromising!  If my leg is on fire, don’t sugar coat it, don’t try to think of a positive way of letting me know, don’t water down the truth,  just be honest and tell me my leg is on fire.  We are talking about souls here, about everlasting life in the kingdom verse death!  Even The Pope is guilty of compromise.  He recently announced that people can have eternal life “without belief in God”.  Yes, you read that right.  The Head of the Catholic Church is compromising the Word of Yahweh.  He is also pushing for the church to ease off of the Gay and Abortion issues.  Compromise!

Softening the truth in order to reach more people is the reason that the church as a whole is not a “Light to the Nations” as we should be. (Matthew 5:16, Matthew 5:14-16, Acts 13:47)  The light is very, very dim because the church has compromised and become like the world.  It is nearly impossible to distinguish between a believer and non-believer in the world today.  Sure lots of people go through the motions, church on Sunday, Wednesday night prayer meeting, choir practice, etc., and they wear their cross jewelry, WWJD bracelets and have a house full of bibles and devotional religious books with a Jesus Fish on the back of their car.  That is not what it is all about though.  If anyone thinks that any of that stuff will matter on judgment day they are crazy.  Y’shua talked about these people. (Matthew 7:21-23)

Conclusion…Our Light is Dim and Compromise is Why!

The Church (body of believers) is nowhere close to what it was in the first century.  Because of compromise for every reason from more numbers to money and power, the light of the Church is so dim it is barely noticeable.  We are all called to walk like Y’shua walked (1 John 2:6) and Y’shua told us that we would do even greater things that He did. (John 14:12)  For a while that was true.  The Apostles preformed miracles and raised the dead. (Matthew 10:8, Acts 9:40-42) They did not have to have a house full of religious literature, cross necklaces and WWJD bracelet’s in order for people to know that they were set apart.  Their light shined so bright that people instantly knew they were special.  People would go out of their way just to get close enough to Peter that maybe even his shadow would touch them. (Acts 5:15-16)

Instead of getting brighter and lighting the way for non-believers, the church has dimmed its light and become more like the world.  Unfortunately, most people do not even notice and even worse, a lot think it is a good thing because they are reaching more people.  An example I like to use is Halloween.  Most people will admit that Halloween is a pagan holiday.  When I was growing up, we didn’t celebrate it.  The church didn’t celebrate it.  Then at some point, some churches decided to have a “Fall Festival” to coincide with Halloween.  Today most churches fully embrace Halloween and even encourage their members to dress up and come to the church to trick or treat.  Some churches, in the name of reaching more people, have started “trunk or treat” where they go set up in a parking lot somewhere and hand out candy from the trunks of their cars.

Compromise!!!  It is the greatest threat to our faith and it is the greatest weapon of the enemy.  Over the last 2000 years, he (Satan) has slowly used compromise to move the body farther and farther from the truth of Yahweh’s Word and farther and farther into the world.  The fact that most people don’t even see this is proof that he has deceived the whole world. (Revelation 12:9, Matthew 24:24)

It is time for believers to stop compromising, to get back to the truth of the Word and throw out the man-made doctrines and traditions, Christian and Jewish alike.

Chris Pope

Chris is a Husband, Father, and Student of Yahweh’s Holy Scriptures. He doesn’t have any degrees in History or Biblical Studies, but neither did Y’shua or any of his disciples. He does have a heart for discerning the Truth found in Scripture, aside from the fog introduced by antisemitism and bad translations. He does not identify with Christianity or Judaism, but is a follower of Yahweh and a Grafted In member of Israel!
